About Haiti
  • Area is about the size of Maryland - 10,714 sq. miles

  • 2nd oldest Independent nation in the Western Hemisphere after the USA

  • Population: nearly 8,500,000 - 743 persons per sq. mile

  • One of the most densely populated and least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere

  • Average life span: 50 years

  • Literacy rate: 50%

  • 1 doctor for every 10,000 people

  • Official Religion: Catholicism, although the Protestant faith is growing rapidly

  • Voodooism is wide spread

The poverty of Haiti -- the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, only less than 2 hours flight time from Miami.  Most of the people live in extreme poverty. 
 
Malnutrition and lack of potable water is the cause of much sickness.  There are no government assistance programs, no welfare, no government health insurance for the poor.  If you dont have the money for health care or hospitalization, you do without.

  • 1/2 the population of 8,000,000 are under the age of 20
  • Only 1/2 of school aged children are in school
  • Only 15% of teenagers are in high school
